What does a Doula do?

Doulas are experienced and educated in birth in order to care for your physical and emotional well-being, by:
Doulas are a unique part of the birthing experience because of their personalized support. They are the one constant support by your side during the birth of your child, from the very beginning of labor until the moment you are holding your newborn baby.
Doctors and midwives often to do not arrive until the end of your labor, and nurses have obligations to your physical health (and are often responsible for more than one birthing mom) so they are not always able to help you stay calm and connected. Since Doulas do not take care of your physical health (we leave that to the doctors, midwives, and nurses) we can be your constant emotional support and advocate throughout the birth of your child!
- Guiding you into laboring positions in order to help labor progress.
- Applying techniques in order to reduce discomfort during surges.
- Encouraging you (and your partner) through all of the stages of your labor to help keep you both calm and connected.
- Tracking your labor progression in order to help you know when it is best to go to the hospital (or call your midwife/doctor).
- Advocating and facilitating communication between you, your partner, and your care providers so that you can concentrate on your labor.
- Guiding your partners by encouraging their presence and involvement, at their personal preference, to help make the birth experience a positive memory for both of you.
- Providing informational support during your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum including information on birth options, breastfeeding, and various other support services across the Lower Mainland.
